Lough Boora Discovery Park is a spectacular 2,000-hectare sanctuary of rehabilitated peat boglands located centrally in County Offaly, Ireland. Once a major site for industrial peat extraction under Bord na Móna now BnM , it has undergone a remarkable ecological transformation into a thriving sanctuary for wildlife, biodiversity, and outdoor recreation. Open 365 days a year, the park seamlessly blends human history, unique outdoor art, and untamed nature, making it one of the leading eco-tourism destinations in the Irish Midlands.
🎨 Key Features & Art in the Landscape
The Sculpture Park: The artistic heart of the park features 24 innovative, large-scale sculptures. Created by international and Irish artists, these pieces are made from the industrial remains of the bog's commercial past—such as old railway tracks, timber, and locomotive parts. The works are designed to interact dynamically with the shifting Irish weather and changing seasons.
Archaeological Significance: Lough Boora holds a monumental place in Irish history. Excavations revealed a nationally important Mesolithic settlement dating back over 8,000 years (around 6500 BC). This discovery fundamentally shifted historical perspectives, proving that early hunter-gatherers had colonised the midlands of Ireland rather than just the coastlines.
🚴 Active Outdoor Trails & Activities
Walking & Cycling Trails: The park features a vast network of over 50km of off-road trails suitable for all ages and abilities. On-site bike hire makes it incredibly easy to grab a pair of wheels and explore the flat, accessible terrain. Bike hire is available at weekends off season but group bookings are available throughout the year by contacting Mid Ireland Adventure Tours .
Fairy Avenue (1.3km): A magic-filled 90-minute woodland walk with fairy doors and a willow labyrinth.
Sculpture Route (3.3km): A gentle loop passing directly through the striking art installations.
Mesolithic Route (9.3km): A 2.5-hour trek through wetlands passing the ancient settlement site.
Longer Circuits: For avid hikers, the Finnamores Route (11.7km) and Turraun Route (15.8km) dive deeper into the quiet reaches of the landscape.
The Turraun Route links directly to the Grand Canal Greenway which gives the opportunity to explore more of Ireland's Hidden Heartlands
Angling: Fishing enthusiasts can test their skills at Loch an Dochas, a lake specifically designed to support anglers of all abilities and mobilities.
🌿 Biodiversity, Nature & Serenity
Wildlife Havens: Having reclaimed the land, nature has roared back. Lough Boora is a vital haven for over 130 species of resident and migrant birds, which can be observed from specialized bird-watching hides. Most notably, it protects the last remaining native population of the endangered wild Grey Partridge. Visitors can also spot Irish hares, foxes, wild goats, and unique wetland dragonflies.
An Portach Ciúin (The Quiet Bog): This dedicated sensory space features a soft 2km bog walk, elevated wet viewing platforms, and sheltered picnic benches specifically designed to let visitors soak in the incredible bird songs and peaceful isolation of the midlands.
☕ Visitor Amenities
The award-winning Visitor Centre sits right on the edge of Loch an Dochais. It acts as the central hub for your trip, hosting public toilets, information guides, extensive picnic spaces, and a welcoming café operated by Ballycommon Bake House with outdoor decking.
